To take a 12-inch laptop, to make it ultra-portable, but also to offer a decent enough level of performance is quite a challenge. That is, however, what Asus has tried to do with the Eee PC 1215B, their latest 12.1-inch mini-laptop. Let’s see how good of a job they have done…
Design, ports and features
Similar to the other important 12-inch Acer netbook, the 1215n, the 1215b has a plain matte-black exterior that looks familiar, robust and elegant at the same time. There are not many curves, but the lines of the chassis are well-defined, yet not rough.
In terms of dimensions and weight, the 1215b manages to be a decent enough portable device, weighing 3.2 pounds and measuring 11.6 x 7.9 x 0.9 inches, which is similar to most 12-inch pieces of equipment on the market.
As far as connectivity goes, the new Asus netbook comes with no less than three USB ports, Ethernet, HDMI, a VGA port, a 2-in-1 card reader, microphone and headphone jacks, which is comparable even to 14 or 15-inch laptops.
Keyboard, touchpad and screen
Again, in terms of keyboard, the 1215b is almost identical to the 1215n, which means that you can expect a little cluster and some not that pleasant noises. However, the touchpad is extremely smooth, responsive and large enough to satisfy everyone’s needs.
The display is a 12.1-inch LED Backlight device with a 1366×768 pixels resolution and all in all offers clear, crisp images and decent brightness and contrast.
Performance, graphics and battery life
While the design, the dimensions and the screen are aspects that make the 1215b an elegant, easy to transport device, in terms of performance things could be better. The new Asus netbook is equipped with a 1.6 GHz AMD E-350 Fusion processor with 2GB of RAM, which makes it a bit faster than the 1215n model in everyday tasks. The graphics card, on the other hand, is a Radeon 6310 chip included in the APU AMD. On paper, it’s a bit slower than the NVIDIA Ion chip of the Asus 1215n, but in practice they are pretty much on par, bioth being able to handle 1080p content with ease and games, even some of the more recent titles..
In terms of battery life, the new Asus 1215B promises to meet consumer’s needs, with an average autonomy of 5 hours and a half when used for web surfing.
In conclusion, the Asus 1215b is a more than satisfying ultraportable device, offering elegant design, good battery life, decent connectivity, display quality and a decent performance level for its price. . It is not an excellent gaming notebook, but it is extremely handy for everyday chores, for web surfing or for video clips and films, making it one of the best portable gaming systems you can find on the market these days.
